Land of giants: large elephant populations and herds, among centuries-old baobabs.
June to October, when wildlife gathers along the Tarangire river.
Herds of dozens of elephants, centuries-old baobabs, and a surprising density of wildlife outside other parks’ peak season.
Camps along the river, with the sound of elephants in the background at night.
Tarangire receives far fewer visitors than Serengeti or Ngorongoro, so game drives feel more private.
Ideal to combine with Lake Manyara on a short route.
Plan your tripTarangire takes its name from the river that runs through it, the area’s main water source in the dry season and the reason so much wildlife gathers here between June and October. It’s known for two things above all: its large elephant herds (some over a hundred strong) and its centuries-old baobabs, which give the landscape a very different character from the Serengeti or Ngorongoro.
Tarangire is the usual starting point of our routes: it’s included in the First Safari (3 days), Classic Safari (4 days), Golden Safari (5 days) and Grand Safari (6 days). Because it receives far fewer visitors than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, game drives here feel more private even in peak season.
It pairs naturally with Lake Manyara on shorter routes, or as the first stop before the Serengeti and Ngorongoro on longer ones.
